Description of Duties: Supply the press with ink and paper. Assist with getting plates and clean/organize press. Assist with make-ready activities, verify production schedules and instructions and complete quality control paperwork. Set up the roll stock in preparation for print, track roll-stock use, general maintenance and cleanup of the press equipment and any other task assigned by the senior press crew.
Essential Job Functions: (Job requires these abilities)
Coordinate with Offset Press Operator I and II and assist on all pre-make ready and make ready functions. These include plate mounting and changing Blankets.
Communicate with supervisor and senior press crew to verify production schedules and instructions.
Checks job set-up parameters with the job ticket specifications to ensure accurate setup.
Complete accurate paperwork related to paper usage, reporting of rolls used and core waste/strip waste.
Ability to perform all roll tending activities including: preparing rolls for splicing, stripping, repairing, loading, splice setting and splicer operation.
Ability to lift 50-84 pound metal/carbon fiber roll shaft every 30-40 minutes and carrying it up to 15 ft (Pressrooms with roll shaft cart, lifting is limited) The Roll Shaft Cart or equivalent must be used if available on all zero speed splicers
Pushing and rolling up to 3000 pound rolls of paper every 30-40 minutes up to 20 feet. Some presses have pneumatic roll pushers to assist with moving rolls
Climbing in and out of press units (4 feet high) hourly.
Ability to lift 25 pound butt roll and carry roll ends of paper that weighs up to 10lbs.
Web the press up after all web breaks.
Pick up waste paper and put in waste cage that is 4-5 feet high.
Ability to assist with installation of rollers in the units.
Ability to assist with compensation and with registers.
Ability to assist with jogging when needed.
Monitors ink fountain and tote levels, press chemistry, web aligners and all other auxiliary equipment and/or process components as assigned.
Evaluates product quality (i.e. color, register, fold, compensation, skidding).
Monitors all printing and press related processes and makes adjustments as necessary.
Completes quality control procedures and required QA documents.
Assists with press maintenance as required and cleans press/ press area as directed by the 2nd or 1st Press Operator.
Ability to clean ink fountains, blankets, rollers and water systems properly.
Know appropriate chemicals to use in cleaning process.
Ability to perform basic lubricating maintenance.
Ability to setup all stacking equipment as required.
Roll shafts must be properly stored on racks, never leaning on a splicer or stored on the surface of the floor.
Only Quad/Graphics approved roll knives will be used. You are required to keep the roll knife in a sheath when not in use.
Provides direction, training and guidance to junior crewmembers.
Follows all company and OSHA safety regulations and encourages safe work habits from other crewmembers.
Performs other duties as assigned in effort to help department achieve performance objectives
